Removing water and diesel bug from standby backup electrical generators

A standby generator is a back-up electrical system that operates automatically at the time of a power outage. There are many emergency services, such as hospitals, that rely on backup electrical generators to ensure non stop running of their power supply.

The one they all have in common is the need for clean fuel when the time comes to callwater can be romoved from back-up electrical generator upon them. Unfortunately some back up generators will have had their fuel stored in the same tank for weeks or months if not years, and temperature swings will have produced condensation in the fuel tank with the water sinking to the bottom of the tank, and water separation as the fuel outlives its shelf life.

Even if the water level is below the intake pipe it only takes a disturbance to get it sloshing around and it provides a perfect breeding ground for diesel bug microbial contamination. If the water doesn't stop the back-up generator engine, you can be sure that a diesel bug slime blocked fuel filter will.

Telecommunications buildings such as call centres and phone relays have back up electrical generators along with office blocks, power stations and commercial centres.

In a perfect world the electrical back up generators would be periodically run and fuel storage purged on a regular basis as a precaution against engine failure at this most critical of times. However, we do not live in a perfect world and with the introduction of bio diesel fuel the situation has not improved. The lower sulphur content of bio diesel fuel allows for greater absorption of  water which separates if left longstanding, and promotes the growth of microbial algae commonly known as diesel bug.

Within a few seconds of a power outage, an automatic transfer switch senses the power loss, signals the backup generator to start and then transfers the electrical load to the generator. The standby generator begins resupplying power to the circuits.

After utility power returns, the automatic transfer switch transfers the electrical load back to the utility and signals the standby generator to shut off. It then returns to standby mode where it awaits the next outage. Most units run on diesel, natural gas or liquid propane gas.

Automatic standby generator systems may be required by building codes for critical safety systems such as elevators in high-rise buildings, fire protection systems, standby lighting, or medical and life support equipment. Residential standby generators are increasingly common, providing backup electrical power to HVAC systems, security systems, and household appliances such as refrigerators, stoves, and water heaters.

Our equipment will remove (with no mess) diesel bug, water, rust deposits, and sludge build up providing there suitable is access to the tank.
